How we do itIf you fail to plan, you're planning to fail

The success of all our services is dependent on good planning. However the unique nature of each river monitoring point means that, on Water Quality Projects, the planning takes on an extra dimension of importance.

The first stage is to carry out River Walks to assess each location for suitability, and/or to find an alternative. The assessment needs to take into account safety and physical accessibility, access permissions, river conditions in different weather conditions and suitable structures for measurement.

The biggest hurdle at this stage is often land access notices, which can often take weeks or months to obtain: it is therefore vital that river walks are carried out at the earliest opportunity, and we can provide staff to help with that process.

Our experience and methods at the planning stage can help with delivery timescales

Our dedicated Water Quality surveyors have experience of producing great results from a wide variety of locations.

Their knowledge enables them to install the equipment taking into account the need for:

  • safety: can the site be accessed if the river is in spate? Is it presenting a hazard to other users?
  • security: will the installation attract the attention of vandals? is it safe from high flows?
  • data quality: what is the best position/method to record accurate, meaningful data?

Maintenance is carried out as and when needed: Water Quality sensors are calibrated/replaced according to manufacturers’ recommendations; Automatic samplers are visited prior to events to maximise sample recovery.

Poor installation and lack of maintenance can defeat even the very best equipment

Rainfall isn’t always predictable: there will sometimes be rainfall events that surprise us in intensity and duration with little notice. IETG have a workforce that’s multi-skilled and flexible enough to react to last-minute events.

However, by monitoring rainfall forecasts closely, having continuous communication with clients and working with them to identify potentially suitable events, we can almost always avoid being caught out by these sudden storm event requests that stretch resources and put pressure on staff.  This means the work can be carried out in a more orderly, controlled manner: making it safer, and more likely to return full data sets.

Managing rainfall event activities correctly is vital for obtaining results and the safety of our staff

Our Data Analysts undergo a unique training programme on the characteristics of water quality data.

They have undergone training by experts in the field to enable them to identify trends and faults in both river flow and in-line sensor data.

All data is examined daily, meaning maintenance is timely and often pre-emptive.

Our Data Analysts have unique training and experience to help with interpretation of WQ data

We have the largest fleet of industry-leading Xylem multi-parameter Water Quality Sondes. These are used for in-line measurement of ammonia, conductivity, pH, temperature, turbidity; we have over 100 battery-powered auto-samplers that can be triggered remotely and configured to change sample rate during storm events. The majority of our samplers are refrigerated to futher preserve colleccted samples – those that aren’t we charge with ice before events.
